SEER2 vs SEER: what the new efficiency rating means for you
8/30/20254 min read· HVAC Pricing Direct
In 2023, the Department of Energy switched from SEER to SEER2 as the official HVAC efficiency rating. Here's what changed.
What's different
SEER2 uses a more realistic testing condition — higher external static pressure — that reflects real-world ductwork. The rating numbers are roughly 4–5% lower than old SEER for the same equipment.
What's a good SEER2 number?
- 14.3 SEER2 — current federal minimum for SoCal (Region 3)
- 16 SEER2 — efficient two-stage systems
- 18+ SEER2 — premium inverter systems
- 22+ SEER2 — top-tier variable-speed systems (best annual savings)
